Kids in the City director Kathy Voyles celebrated The Hague ’ s new “ clean up after your dog, everywhere ” policy by planting a street garden under a lovely chestnut tree. The new rules “ clean-up everywhere and take a bag with you ” were due to come into force on April 1 but it ’ s unclear if they actually have. Kids in the City will be seeking clarification from the council about what ’ s been decided.

s toilet on the Veenkade. It will be interesting to see if dog-owners respect our obvious efforts to beautify the street,

t wait to see what will happen over the next few months. We do however remain concerned about enforcement and attitudes of some dog owners who refuse to clean up. We are not convinced that the council is heading in the right direction for attitude change: that will be dependent on a strong public education campaign which must surely follow such a groundbreaking change of legislation!
The foundation is hoping that this will be the beginning of the end of the dog-fouling plague, which costs The Hague so much in terms of image and tourism and is just so very unpleasant!
The Kids in the City foundation is dedicated to cleaning and greening The Hague with a focus on encouraging young environmentalists with a sense of shared urban community. Our first project is a bilingual book about a family living in The Hague with a strong “ clean up after yourself and your pets ” message. The “ Dear Mr Dog/meneertje hond ” competition, open to children from 4 – 12 yrs, is running in conjunction with the book project and closes on May 1. See this website for details. For Kids who want a clean, green, cool city
We are for kids who want more play areas, more grass and flowers and less dog poop and rubbish. We are for everyone who wants to play and picnic on the grass. We are also for dogs and their families — we want to able to share our city spaces in the best possible way. We want to work with kids (and their mums and dads), the council, the city cleaners, the playground designers, the police, the politicians and dog-owners plus schools to make our city child and dog- friendly. To keep informed about our current projects please check this site regularly. We need your ideas and opinions. Tell us what you think of The Hague and how we can make our city better. Hondentoilet wordt straattuin. Kathy Voyles, voorzitter van de stichting Kids in the City, is blij met het nieuwe hondenpoepbeleid van de stad Den Haag. Om dat te vieren plantte ze een straattuintje onder één van de mooie kastanjebomen aan de Veenkade. Het nieuwe beleid houdt in dat hondenbezitters voortaan altijd de poep van hun viervoeters moeten opruimen. Bovendien zijn ze verplicht altijd een opruimzakje bij zich te dragen. Het beleid zou 1 april van kracht worden. Of dat ook gebeurt is, is onduidelijk. Kids in the City zal de gemeente om duidelijkheid vragen.
“ Het hoe anders een straat er uit ziet met een paar planten” zegt Kathy. “En moeilijk is het niet. Onder de boom staan wat kruiden en stevige éénjarigen. Voorheen was dit niet meer dan een hondentoilet. Het is interessant om te zien of hondenbezitters deze poging om de straat op te leuken zullen respecteren. Ik ga elke week foto ’ s maken om te laten zien wat ermee gebeurt. ”
Kids in the City is blij met de nieuwe regels en nieuwsgierig naar wat er de komende maanden gaat gebeuren. De stichting vraagt zich wel af hoe de regels gehandhaafd zullen worden. We zijn er niet van overtuigd dat het nieuwe beleid mensen echt zal veranderen. Dat kan alleen met een sterke campagne die er – nu de regels van kracht zijn – snel moet komen.
Met de regels, zo hoopt de stichting, komt er een eind aan het hondenpoepprobleem dat zowel voor bewoners als toeristen tot zoveel ergernis leidt.
De stichting Kids in the City zet zich in voor een schoner en groener Den Haag, vooral door kinderen aan te moedigen zich voor hun stad in te zetten. Het eerste project van de stichting is een tweetalig boek over een familie met hond. Aan het boek, met de titel ‘Dear Mr Dog/meneertje Hond” is een wedstrijd verbonden voor kinderen van 4 tot 12 jaar. Tot 1 mei kunnen kinderen een bijdrage leveren aan het boek, door een tekening, verhaal of gedicht te maken. Details over de stichting én over de wedstrijd zijn te vinden op www.kidsinthecity.org.

Voor kinderen die een schone, groene en coole stad willen
Wij zijn voor kinderen die meer speelgebieden, meer grasvelden en bloemen willen en minder hondenpoep en vuilnis.
Wij zijn voor iedereen die wil spelen en picknicken op grasvelden. Wij zijn ook voor honden en hun families- we willen de mogelijkheid om onze stadsruimtes op de beste manier te delen. Wij willen werken met kinderen (en hun mama ’ s en papa ’ s), de gemeenteraad, de stadsschoonmakers, de ontwerpers van speelruimtes, de politie, de politici en hondenbezitters en scholen om onze stad kind- en hondvriendelijk te maken. Bekijk deze website regelmatig om over onze activiteiten geïnformeerd te blijven.
