On Sketching

Gerrit Noordzij visited the TypeMedia department and gave a short lecture on drawing and sketching.

Everyone will have their own preferred ways of drawing and sketching. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t think about how we do the things we do. If we draw a line, we try to divide two shapes we can not yet see — a black and a white. So while the line is likely to become the border between the two shapes, chances are it will not be in the right place. It is more important to get the big things, like weight, proportion and contrast right, then to have a smooth contour.
